Stand Alone ABAP Compiler?

Stand-alone ABAP Compiler (SAC): An Open Source tool for offline ABAP Programming would allow developers to create source code in an “offline fashion” – this becomes especially useful as it is now possible to develop ABAP using the eclipse IDE.

The following article on SDN show that some developers have been looking at this approach, and another initiative called “Caffeine – ABAP to Go” has also been undertaken.

From what I can ascertain these initiatives are likely quite outdated now – with the availability of SAP’s cloud appliance library, it is probably easier to develop directly against these virtual machines than try to implement a stand alone compiler approach. What do you think?
